Anuja Trehan Kapur (born 24 October 1975) is an Indian criminal psychologist who is also a school counselor, social activist and advocate.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education

Born in Delhi, India, Kapur was raised in a Punjabi family. She went to Queen Mary School in Tis Hazari, Delhi and later earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and master's degree in criminology from Delhi University.

Kapur later completed another course in forensic science from Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi. She holds an International diploma in victimology from The Tokiawa International Victimology Institute, Japan. She also completed her LLB from CCS University.[5]

Professional career

After graduating from Delhi University, Kapur joined Delhi Public School as a student counselor. Later, she joined CURES NGO as Executive Director.[6]

Kapur started sharing theories on various high-profile criminal cases such as Indrani Mukerjea case, the Somnath Bharti case, the Asaram Bapu case, the Sunanda Pushkar, the 2008 Noida double murder case (known as the "Aarushi murder" case), the 2012 Delhi gang rape (known as the "Nirbhaya rape case", and the 2014 Badaun gang rape allegations.[7]

As a psychologist she shares input on various psychological and mental issues related to abnormal behavior, suicide,[8] child psychology,[9] divorce, bullying, re-marriage and its effects on children, social media and networking, and relationship issues.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]

Kapur founded a non-governmental organization named Nirbhiya Ek Shakti, which is the Center for Victim Assistance.[20][21] She spent one day in Sheroes Cafe for the purpose of giving counseling to the victims in Agra.[21][22] Under the Operation Nirbheek she did counseling for various government students in municipal and private schools on.[23][24] She also raises her voice for acid attack victims.[25]

Kapur attended the 15th International Symposium, which was organized by WSV, Victim Support Australia, Angelhands and the Australian Institute of Criminology.[26]

In March 2017, Kapur defended the case of a 24-year-old Delhi based model girl and a 16-year-old Nepalese girl who were allegedly raped and then forced into prostitution.[27][28][29]

Public speeches

In April 2017, Kapur spoke with India Today Education on different levels of depression and how to tackle them.[30]

On April 1, 2017, Kapur shared her expertise on, “Attempted suicide no longer a crime as India changes attitude to mental health problems”.[31] Kapur also gave her expertise on depression on the eve of World Health Day held in April 7, 2017.[32]

In January 16, 2018, Kapur attended an event of Shimoga Rotary District where she spoke about women empowerment.[33][34]

Published articles

In October 4, 2017, Kapur wrote an article for The Indian Express about the Career, scope, skills, jobs and education Qualification in Criminal psychology.[35] She also wrote an article how a subject Criminology can help to stop crime.[36] She also shared the tips to become a Professional Psychologist and how to choose this as a career in an article she wrote on October 11, 2017.[37]

In October 14, 2017, Kapur wrote an article about the how can we overcome the Criminal nature of the person.[38] She also shared shared her expertise how to stay calm under pressure specially for entrepreneurs in an article she wrote on October 30, 2017.[39]

In January 29, 2018, Kapur wrote an article in which she described, “An unforgiving crime, child sexual abuse has become a source of worry for parents”.[40] She also wrote an article on “Mental strain among women arises due to the pressure of delivering and pleasing everybody” in February 26, 2018.[41]

Tedx event appearances

In March 25, 2017, Kapur spoke about “the changing modus operandi of Crime” in a Tedx event organised by JECRC college, Jaipur.[42] She spoke about “Shaping of Criminal Minds” in a tedx event organised by Nirma University Gujarat in April 22, 2017.[43] Kapur also spoke about “shaping of a criminal mind” in a Tedx event organised by GSMC, Mumbai in April 26, 2017.[44]

In February 24, 2018, Kapur attended a TEdx talk event organized by NMIMS college Bangalore where she spoke on “Critics Enhances Personality”[45] She also spoke at TEDxPSIT Kanpur on April 17, 2018.[46]

Public interest litigation filed

In July 24, 2017, Delhi High Court issued the order to SDMC and Fire Department on PIL which was filed by the Anuja Kapur on the violations of building laws and the master plan in the Hauz Khas village area of the city.[47][48][49][50] As a result of the SDMC status report filed by SDMC officials before the acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal, 19 eateries lost their licences on August 23, 2017.[51]

On January 17, 2918, the Delhi High Court issued a notice hearing the PIL filed by Anuja Kapur that No eatery in Hauz Khas Village has sanctioned building plan.[52][53]

Kathua rape case

In April 16, 2018, Kapur filed a petition on Asifa Rape and murder case which was heard by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and some other judges.[54] The Chief Justice of India heard the Petition of Mrs Kapur in Asifa rape and murder case in which she asked for CBI probe in the matter.[55][56]

On April 17, 2018, Pak-based peer raises Kathua rape case in House of Lords; calls on UK government to intervene and mention about the Mrs Kapur’s petition.[57]

  • 2017 - Kapur got the international excellence award for the best criminal psychologist category from Shilpa Shetty Kundra.[63]
  • 2017 - Kapur got the "Rising Star award" for her outstanding work.[64][65]

Personal life

Kapur resides in Delhi and she is married to Amit Kapur, a businessman from Delhi. They have two sons.[6]
